Your student recently brought home 2 reading program packets...Bikes for Books and Silverwood. Twenty-two minutes of reading every day in the month of February earns your child a Silverwood ticket, 30 chances at a brand new bike, and a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut! You will keep track of your child's reading minutes at home and give them the certificates, which they will turn in to the library at school. Teachers will hand out certificates for the reading that happens at school. What a deal!!

Thank you Mrs. Dews for letting me be a part of your 4th grade class. I am so excited to get to know everyone and spend the winter here in Columbia Falls. Ms. Young will be student teaching in our classroom until March 23.
Tomorrow is picture day! Don't forget to turn in your order forms, if you haven't already. If your student is in my math class, we are having a mid-module assessment tomorrow, too.
School has been cancelled for today, Thursday September 14, due to threats made against SD6.
We had fun experimenting with sound, which we learned is made of vibrations, after making paper cup telephones. Take a look...
The students and I are beginning to get into the groove of 4th grade. We're getting used to the daily schedule, which includes some students shifting to other classrooms for Literacy and Math. We haven't started our full-blown schedule yet, but we will on Monday. On Monday, we begin to use our newly-acquired reading series, Journeys. Students will be given a list of 20 spelling words each Monday. They will take a pre-test on the words, to identify which words they need to study and which words they've already mastered. Any student who receives a perfect score on the pre-test will not be required to take the spelling test on Friday of that week. To practice spelling at home, I've included a link (on the "Links" page, when you click on "More" at the top of this page) to Spelling City. Students can go to the page I've created for our class, click on "Spelling Unit One Lesson One" and practice spelling our current word list. I've also included the vocabulary words in a separate list, since those words will be part of the weekly reading tests.
I did not require students to complete any homework last week, but some students wanted to take their unfinished math worksheets home. If you are trying to help your child with math and you need a little clarification, use this YouTube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdjnwlJTfXE I placed our first Scholastic book order last night. The books that you all ordered should be delivered to the school in 7-10 business days. As soon as they arrive, I will let you know via ClassDojo and I will send the books home with your child. I appreciate your orders because I am able to earn free books that I can give away as incentives. I've set up all of my students in a keyboarding training program called Typing.com. Head on over to my "Links" page to go there. The format that I used in setting up the accounts is as follows:
username= first initial.last name26 (don't forget to put 26 after your last name!) password=your 5-digit lunch pin (email me or message me on ClassDojo is you need your pin) Students can log into the program from home, and we will be going to the school's computer lab every Friday afternoon for 30 minutes of typing practice. Proper technique is very important in fourth grade because students will be taking the state exam on the computer, which requires students to type responses. The faster they can accurately type, the better off they will be. Above is a description of the challenge. Below are photos of the students working together to solve the problem.
