I am very excited because tomorrow, I am going to tell my students about a new learning opportunity -- Passion Project! Starting next week, students will devote part of their literacy time researching a topic they are passionate about. They won't only be learning more about their favorite topic -- they will ALSO be teaching it to the rest of us! We'll discuss it in class and I will help them get started brainstorming topics, but I also ask that you discuss options at home.
I hope you are looking at your student's planner each night to see what we're doing in class. As I wrote in my brochure, I don't require a parent signature in the planner unless there is a student who needs to be held more accountable. We spend a lot of time in fourth grade teaching students to be responsible for their own learning. Your student will be setting their own learning goals, viewing their own test data, and determining what skills they need to practice.
We spent quite a bit of time going over rules, procedures, and expectations the first two days of school. I am very happy that so far we've had perfect attendance. I give everyone 2 Class Dojo points on each day that everyone is present. If you haven't already done so, please set up your Class Dojo account. This is the way I communicate with families and it's also our behavior management tool. You can easily see how your child is behaving in class.
The fourth grade teachers met on Friday to create math classes. We used your student's math STAR data from last year to make our decisions. Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 4th students will be switching classes for math instruction. We will begin the year with a unit on geometry. On the Home page on the class web page, I've posted some videos that walk you through the homework problems. Your student will only have math homework if they don't finish work in class. You may, however, request math homework for your student and I'd be happy to oblige.
